FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the name of the family of the canes we use?

The canes we use belong to the ARUNDO DONAX family. It is the only species of the family, which is hydrophilic rather than aquatic.

What is the life cycle of the cane if not cut?

The life cycle of the cane on our plantation is a maximum of three years if it is not cut. In its first year of life, it takes its full length and cross-section (internal and external). During the second year, it becomes hard, i.e. it matures. Two-year-old canes are canes, which have been for two years on our plantation before being cut down. That is, they have been naturally dried on our plantation. On the contrary, one-year-old canes are canes cut down during their first year of life.

When are canes harvested?

The harvest of canes takes place only in January and February, when canes are frozen, free of saps, thus becoming resistant to future processing and outdoor constructions.

Why choose one-year-old canes?

Knitted canes made from one-year-old canes may also be delivered upon request, which may be a more affordable solution, but is not recommended due to its low endurance.

Why choose two-year-old canes?

MICHALAKIS – CANE PLEX is the ONLY company of its sector providing two-year-old canes. This kind of cane is more durable, has no shrinkage when drying (which means no gaps in the knitted canes) and may be maintained just like wood constructions.

What is its advantage over one-year-old canes.

The most important advantage of two-year-old canes over one-year-old canes is that they may be maintained the way wood constructions are maintained, which makes it impossible for knitted canes to be affected by any kind of parasites, which adds longevity to the construction.
